NPA to review Mpembe and co-accused acquittal

Mahikeng: The North West High Court in Mahikeng on Monday, March 29th acquitted General Mzondase Mpembe, Gideon van Zyl, Dingaan Madoda and Oupa Pule of any wrong doing. The four were facing charges of defeating and obstructing the ends of justice; by allegedly concealing information on circumstances surrounding the death of Modisaotsile Sagalala who died in police custody during the Marikana Lonmin wage strike on 16 August 2012.
As well as contravening the IPID Act by not reporting the death and also contravening the Commission‘s Act by not disclosing in their report the death of Segalala.
“The National Prosecuting Authority has noted the judgement of the High Court of South Africa, North West Division… We will study the judgment in order to make an informed decisions after the court found the four policemen not guilty of the three charges they were facing relating to the death of a miner in Marikana.” said Henry Mamothame NPA Regional Spokesperson – North West Division.
